MFA Policies
The MFA have have incorporated major issues affecting the Mörrumsån, into four primary policy platforms and two secondary policies and guidelines
Primary Policy Platforms
Stop all commercial netting operations policy: -
Sodra Cell AB have ceased their netting operation for three years. Leaving three (3) other commercial netting operations in-place. May is a good month for these nets men, as this is the time of the year that the spring May/June salmon come into the river, and a total of thirty one (31) nets will be spread out in the estuary and sea bay area. In addition, to the illegal nets that will be operating freely, as the sea bay area is not patrolled by the authorities whatsoever.
The largest net operator have twenty one (21) nets, and the balance of the other nets are spread amongst the other two nets men. What we do know is that in month of May 2005, just one net alone accounted for taking in excess of 500 salmon. when was the last time a large (over 18 kg) salmon was caught? Salmon of a great size, that used make the Mörrumsån famous throughout the World. One of over 20 kg, was served up at a corporate dinner party in 2006, supplied by one of the second major netting operators.
Re-stocking policy(if required): -
Until the commercial netting operations cease, the authorities the fishery are unable to implement a clear strategy, regarding the preservation and maintaining of the rivers native and self-producing salmon stocks.
In the absence of a strategy, the MFA have drawn up, a comprehensive and detailed re-stocking policy. which is based on the benchmarks and experience from other fisheries, known professionals, data and results. This re-stocking policy will be available on request, after the copyright process has been finalized by the 14th of May.
Catch & release: -
The fishery to date, has no clear and coherent "catch & release" mandates, that protects the declining numbers of salmon and sea trout. In the absence of a fishery catch-and-release policy, those that are interested can download the MFA catch-and-release guidelines here: Guidelines and the full and detailed MFA analysis and policy here: Policy The MFA policy has also taken into consideration, very warm weather conditions that exist in the Mörrumsån, during certain times of the year.
Severe Climatic changes:-
To counter the environmental effects of Global Warming on the river. The MFA have drawn up "A Counter Measure Policy", based on the practices and utilized by other fisheries throughout the World. A procedural process and methodology, that will secure lasting counter measures to Global Warming.
Secondary Policies and Guidelines
The future utilization of the Mörrumsån:-
The MFA believe, that it is every one's right, irrespective of age that fish the Mörrumsån. That they can look forward to a lasting, safe and secure future for the river. Whereas, there is sustainable, and full utilization of the Mörrumsån, for all people, the local community and county.
Overcrowding of pools: -
In the absence of a written "Code of Conduct" from the fishing office. The MFA would like to think, that many would "show by example" and take heed of the following; Lead by example, and remember, the river Mörrumsån is perhaps the only Salmon River in the world that still allows overcrowding in pools. You would not, or could not do it on other rivers you visit. So try and help us to bring back to the river a "little more class" than its been known for in the past……………thank you.
