Catch-and-Release
"We are defined by others, by what we do"
The number of salmon going through the river system has been declining since 2001, and there is an ever increasing need to preserve, what little salmon stocks that are left. Until we are successful in stopping the estuary netting operations, no one really knows how many more salmon would come into the river system.
There is now no doubt whatsoever, why the salmon breeding areas have in some cases disappeared altogether, and others have got smaller.........................the breeding areas have become under populated. Another major factor, is that female salmon are declining at an ever decreasing rate, and very shortly, some sort of control has to be implemented.
The MFA have several times requested, that the fishery exercise a limited "Catch-and-Release" policy for 2007. One suggestion was, all female salmon would released, another was, only one fish per species could be kept in 2007. The fishery has declined to implement a policy of "catch-and-release. However, have endorsed the MFA's suggestion to post on its web site a Catch-and-Release policy for those that wish to help the MFA in its attempts to limit the numbers of salmon killed this year.
